IPSY Lunch "Engagement" - Top 8 Wedding Season Skincare Tips!

Last week I had the pleasure of hosting a lunch “engagement” with IPSY stylists. IPSY is an interactive beauty-sampling program co-founded by YouTube star Michelle Phan. It was created to give beauty lovers a chance to discover products that are perfect for their lifestyle.

IPSY’s interactive platform includes skincare, make-up and hair tutorial videos created by their expert stylists. Below are some of the tips I shared with the stylists featuring the top 8 frequently asked questions I receive on how to get flawless skin this wedding season.

Question 1: Should I use a toner to wipe off summer sweat after I wash my face?

A: Avoid toner overuse. According to the Journal of Pediatrics in May 2013, patients are warned against the overuse of toners because toners can overly dry the skin. Using a toner, or over-use of toners can have the same effect as over-washing your face and cause irritation.

Question 2: How often should I be washing my face?

A: Wash your face twice a day morning and night and avoid over-washing your face: It’s a myth that the more you wash your face to remove oil, the more acne will improve. This can actually have the reverse effect and cause your skin to produce excess oil to over-compensate. It also strips the natural moisturizers on your face and can lead to skin irritation.

Question 3: Should I switch moisturizers during the summer?

A: Not everyone needs a moisturizer: Moisturizers are useful for dry or irritated skin. Patients with oily skin don’t always need a moisturizer. You may notice that you need less moisture during the hotter summer months since your skin is producing more oil. Layering on an additional moisturizer to oily skin can actually clog pores. The only time a person with oily skin needs a moisturizer is if their skin gets irritated, such as after using acne-fighting products, or possibly a sunburn. In these cases, I recommend a water-based moisturizer such as the Dr. Lin Skincare Daily Hydrating Gel because water-based moisturizers do not clog pores and are ideal for oily and acne-prone skin.

Question 4: Is there a difference between using an actual SPF underneath your make-up opposed to a mineral foundation with SPF?

A: Mineral based SPF’s should be used in addition to an SPF. Depending on the foundation coverage needed, you may end up using more or less make-up so the SPF is inconsistent.

Question 5: How do I choose the right type of SPF that won’t cause my make-up to look cakey?

A: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that filters both UVA and UVB rays: SPF (Sun Protection Factor) only indicates how much UVB protection you get, but doesn’t indicate whether or not a sunscreen has UVA protection. Look for ingredients such as avobenzone, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and mexoryl. These are sun-blocking agents that filter out both UVA and UVB.

Of the broad spectrum sun blocking ingredients, I recommend the chemical sun blocking agents, such as avobenzone and mexoryl because they are clear. The physical blocks of titanium dioxide and zinc have a white color that may interfere with make-up and can leave a visible residue.

Question 6: How can I minimize the appearance of pores and black-heads so I don’t have to use as much primer?

A: Look for a cleanser that contains salicylic acid. This ingredient is effective at purifying clogged pores to reduce the appearance of pores for more flawless looking make-up coverage.

Question 7: How can I extend the life of a self-tanner?

A: Self tanners work by causing a chemical reaction that helps your skin appear more tan. Scrubbing with a loofa or exfoliating helps the self-tanners penetrate more deeply and effectively for optimal coverage and a longer lasting tan.

Question 8: What’s the best way to remove make-up after a big day like a wedding?

A: While it is possible to over-wash your face, it’s okay to use cleansing pads throughout the day to prevent breakouts caused by sweat and make-up. If you aren’t ready to hop in the shower and wash your face, I suggest removing make-up with my Pore Refining Pads. They are pre-mediated with 10% glycolic acid to purify clogged pores without causing irritation.
